What is SHARE?
SHARE (Self Help And Resource Exchange) is a program that provides good, nutritious food at affordable prices to anyone in our community. It combines volunteering to support the community with a chance to cut grocery costs.
How does it work?
SHARE is a state-wide cooperative program that is able to provide food at 50% off supermarket prices. Families who are interested in getting food sign up for boxes of food in advance. Food is then purchased in bulk and distributed to SHARE sites one day a month. People who sign up are asked to complete 2 hours of volunteer work each month.
Who is eligible for SHARE?
Everyone is eligible. There are no age, income, or membership requirements. The more people who participate, the more purchasing power the program has.
How does the program work in North Liberty?
Families sign up in the first couple of weeks of the month. People can sign up for one or more boxes of their choice. Choices include all meat boxes, fruit and vegetable boxes, general grocery boxes, etc. Food is distributed at the rec center on a Saturday morning later in the month.
How do I sign up?
You can sign up in person at the rec center, online at www.shareiowa.org, or by contacting our local SHARE representative, Ila Johnson, at 319-626-2569.
If you have questions or want to know more about SHARE, please feel free to contact Ila Johnson by phone at 319-626-2569 or by email at paulilaj@southslope.net.
